Piston Gradient Fractionator™ Base Unit

Base unit for the fractionation of centrifuged samples in linear density gradients from ultracentrifuge tubes. The process is very reproducible and highest sample purity can be achieved. The tube remains undamaged. Separate Tube holders are required for each tube size. These must be purchased in addition to the basic device. Description

Manual and automated band extraction: visible bands can be easily fractionated by manual operation. Further it is possible to create automated gradient profiles to fractionate ultra-small, invisible bands (e.g. ribosomes, polysomes, nanotubes). The band extraction is carried out in adjustable step sizes. Smallest band size: 10µm.

The most valuable component of the Piston Gradient Fractionator™ is the patented Trumpet Tip™, a tapered funnel, which transfers bands from a horizontal layer to a fine liquid column without puncturing the tube. The special shape of the Trumpet Tip™ prevents the destruction of bands by reducing laminar capillary flow to a minimum. Fractionation is very precise, since smallest volumes are highly expanded in the thin column of the transparent tubing. The system allows cleaning of the tubing by rinsing buffer or blowing air in between individual fractions, eliminating cross contamination of consecutive fractions.

An UV/VIS measuring cell records UV/VIS spectra during fractionation (optional). If necessary a fraction collector can also be implemented (optional). Required signals are provided via the signal output of the Piston Gradient Fractionator™.

Due to the growing number of applications, special versions of the Piston Gradient Fractionator™ have been developed:
